Meet Lucy McGarvey!

Lucy has owned and operated an Art Gallery and framing shop on Peter St. S. for 35-ish years. She owns the Shadowbox Art & Framing at 15 Peter St. S., offering fine art, framing services and art supplies. Lucy moved to Orillia in 1981 with her husband (local Artist Will McGarvey, returning to his hometown) and son Stefan. She feels Orillia is a great place to grow family and business and has raised four kids amidst running her own business. 
 
 
When did you first open the Shadowbox?

I opened the Shadowbox Art & Framing in October of 1982 at 5 Peter St. S. After moving to my current address at 15 Peter St. S. I was able to expand and hire staff. My business philosophy is to know our product, be friendly and helpful and support local businesses.
 
What are the ‘biggest’ changes you’ve witnessed/experienced on Peter St. S.?

Definitely the development of the (downtown Orillia) Arts District. When I was on the Downtown Orillia Management Board I worked hard to help see the potential of this block (of Peter St. S.), especially when the Sir Sam Steele gallery (now OMAH) opened its doors.
 
What advice do you have for people just commencing with a ‘creative’ business?

My advice would be to ride the wave of slow winter months and hang in as long as you can! We should all support each other as much as possible. Get involved where and when you can. Be positive and hopefully we can all be part of a creative movement.
